After virtually four years with each other, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) ultimately get married in a picturesque wedding in lesser Manhattan. But when George sheds his job soon after, the couple has to offer their apartment and - victims of the ruthless New York City realty market - briefly live apart until they can find a budget-friendly new residence.
While George actions in with two police officers (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) which live down stairways, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his other half (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teen boy (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bed room. While having a hard time with the discomfort of splitting up, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational stress and capricious household dynamics of their new living setups.
